Why it’s on OnsenBase
The biggest machiya in the affordable band of our 144-property Kyoto pull: 60 m² of townhouse, rented whole, with a semi-open-air bath, a small garden and a terrace, from ¥23,120 (≈€140). Split between four people that’s cheaper per head than a hostel bunk in Gion — for a house. Japanese-platform guests rate it 4.7, and the Booking.com listing spells out the open-air bath rather than burying it, which in our experience separates the real thing from wishful photography.
What to expect
Semi-open-air means the tub sits under a roof, open to the garden air on one side — you feel the outside without being rained on. Water is heated, not onsen. Like all machiya rentals this is self check-in with no staff on site, in a genuinely residential block: wooden construction, audible neighbors, unspoken quiet hours after 22:00. Four travelko reviews is a thin base; we listed it anyway because the operator (Risshisha, which runs a family of Kyoto machiya) has a long track record across its houses.
Eat nearby — this is the point
Same quiet Umekoji triangle as our other Kyoto machiya picks: 3 minutes to Umekoji-Kyotonishi station, park, aquarium and railway museum on your doorstep — a family base disguised as a romantic one. Dinner is a 15-minute walk to Kyoto station (Ramen Koji with its ticket machines, food halls with picture displays), or roll the dice on the local izakaya along Shichijo-dori where you may be the only non-neighbor in the room. Buy breakfast supplies the night before; this block doesn’t do morning cafés.
If it’s sold out
Rinn Hanayacho Asagiri (smaller machiya, fully open-air tub plus engawa) or APA Hotel Kyoto Gojo Omiya (the chain-hotel fallback with a balcony spa tub, 71 reviews).
