About OnsenBase
OnsenBase surfaces Japanese accommodation that international travelers can't easily find: rooms with private open-air baths from ¥11,000, Japanese-Western family rooms that sleep five, 56 m² apartments inside Tokyo for the price of a shoebox near the station everyone knows.
This inventory is invisible for a simple reason: international booking sites can't filter for it, and the Japanese-language data where it lives never gets translated. We work from that Japanese data directly — complete regional databases, sorted by price, screened by public criteria — and publish what we find in English and Spanish.
How we choose hotels
- We start from complete Japanese datasets (hundreds of properties per theme), cheapest first.
- We cut love hotels, listings rated under 3.5/5, shared-bath rooms presented as private, and suspicious data.
- We only recommend places you can book from abroad — and when a great property can't earn us a commission, we list it anyway and say so.
- We label what hotels won't: real hot-spring water vs. heated water, "semi" open-air baths, and the honest reason a cheap room is cheap.
Who is behind this
OnsenBase is built in Japan by a travel-industry veteran who spent years designing the hotel search systems of one of Japan's largest travel comparison sites — the same kind of systems this site now digs into on your behalf.
