The postcard of Nara — Sarusawa Pond with the five-story Kofuku-ji pagoda reflected in it — is a view you normally photograph and walk away from. Yoshidaya lets you bathe in front of it: a 38 m² deluxe twin with a pond-facing semi-open-air bath, in an inn that has stood on this spot since 1868 (Meiji 1). It’s the priciest of our three Nara picks at ¥32,736 (≈US$211) for two, and it earns it with the location most people don’t know is bookable — one minute from Kofuku-ji and the deer — plus the highest review base in the cluster (4.6 across 14). Sleep here and the pond at dawn is yours before the day-trippers arrive.

What to expect

*Semi-*open-air means the tub sits under a roof, open to the pond air on one side — you get the view and the outside without being rained on. The water is heated cypress-scented water, not onsen; central Nara has no natural spring, and Yoshidaya’s own bath pages describe it plainly as such. Beyond the room bath, there’s a free-to-use private bath, “Tou-no-yu,” angled at the pagoda. This is a traditional ryokan — expect futon on tatami, an earlier rhythm, and a kaiseki-style dinner rather than a lobby bar. At 158 years old the building is historic, not new-build slick; guests rate it warmly for exactly that.

Eat nearby — and why you eat in

Yoshidaya sits at the park’s edge, the quietest and earliest-closing part of Nara — by ~20:00 the streets around Sarusawa Pond are dark and the deer have the place. That’s the argument for taking the inn’s dinner: you’re one minute from Kofuku-ji, not from nightlife. If you want to go out, walk 10 minutes into Naramachi (old merchant lanes, izakaya and cafés) or toward Kintetsu-Nara station, both livelier than the pond side but still winding down by 21:00. Eat before eight, then take the lantern-lit pond walk — that’s the reason to be here, not the restaurants.
