Why it’s on OnsenBase

A hinoki (Japanese cypress) bath in a 40 m² suite for under ¥10,000 — in Tokyo. The top “presidential” suite even has a private open-air bath. This is the Randor group’s formula (see also Bevel Tokyo): residence-style buildings in the untouristed shitamachi — Tokyo’s old downtown — traded at prices that would get you 12 m² near Ueno station.

What to expect — including the honest part

Same deal as its sibling Bevel, and the 3.4/5 score has the same explanation: this is an 18-room converted residence with self-service check-in and no uniformed concierge. Kitchenette, balcony, laundry — you’re renting a small Tokyo apartment with a spectacular bathtub. Book it as that, not as a hotel, and the math is absurd in your favor.

Eat nearby — and the taxi trick

Machiya is authentic shitamachi: a local shopping street, motsuyaki (offal-skewer) taverns and old-school izakaya where pointing at the next table’s order works fine. One stop toward Mikawashima sits one of Tokyo’s oldest Koreatowns — serious yakiniku and hormone grills at local prices. And the Toden Arakawa line — Tokyo’s last streetcar — stops right at Machiya; riding it at dusk is an attraction in itself.

Now the taxi math, because this is the part foreigners never believe: Ueno is ~10 minutes and about ¥1,500 by taxi. Four people = ¥400 each — the price of one canned beer — to be back from Ameyoko in your own living room. Apps like GO or Uber remove the language barrier entirely.

If it’s sold out

Siblings nearby: Randor Residence Tokyo Annex (39–50 m², the group’s best-reviewed) and Bevel Tokyo (56 m² apartments in Horikiri). The group also runs “Classic” near Mikawashima — the budget sibling, triples from ¥9,000.
