What to expect

Serviced-apartment living: kitchen corner, proper wardrobe space, room to actually open your suitcases — plural. No bath theatrics here (that’s the Suites with its hinoki tubs); the Annex’s product is pure space and calm. Families of four fit without anyone sleeping in a corridor.

Eat nearby — and the taxi trick

You’re in the same delicious pocket as the Suites: Machiya’s shotengai, motsuyaki taverns, the Mikawashima Koreatown one stop away, and the Toden tram rattling past. For a bigger night, the Chiyoda line delivers you to Nishi-Nippori/Sendagi for the Yanaka neighborhood’s evening strolls. Taxi home from Ueno after everything closes: ~¥1,500, split four ways — cheaper than one more round would have been.
