This is the cheapest real private onsen we found in the entire Kanto region — and we checked all 582 properties. Every single room has an open-air bath fed by the hotel’s own spring source, 100% natural hot-spring water, no dilution, no reheating tricks. Hotels charging three times more don’t offer that. The trade-off: the building and décor are dated, and the hotel is upfront about competing on substance rather than style.

What to expect

Casual Euro runs on a simple formula: forest setting on the edge of Nikko, generous buffet meals with local ingredients, and that private rotenburo on every balcony. Rooms are functional rather than fancy. Japanese guests treat it as a beloved “value onsen” spot — the kind of place people return to yearly — and that’s exactly the spirit in which to book it.

Notes for international travelers

• Tattoos: irrelevant here — your bath is your own.
• Getting there: trains from Asakusa (Tobu line) take about 2 hours; the hotel is walkable from Tobu-Nikko station with light luggage, or a short taxi ride.
• Nikko itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site (Toshogu shrine complex) — this hotel makes an ideal 1–2 night stop between Tokyo and points north.
• Meals: if you take the dinner plan, dinner is served early (from ~6 p.m.) at a fixed time. Plan your sightseeing accordingly.
• Language: basic English works for check-in; translation apps cover the rest.
